Background:

1. An Indonesia based banking company wanted to build a fully digital mobile banking application that would help them to become a strong tech-based bank embedded in Indonesia’s digital ecosystem.

2. They wanted Staxa LLP to design and develop a modern infrastructure that was highly performant, technically advanced, cost optimized and security compliant.

3. The goal was to build a fully automated secure, scalable and sustainable cloud native infrastructure for this tech-based life-centric finance and banking application.

Project Timeline:

Four to Six Months

Challenges:

1. Being a startup, everything was new to them especially in DevOps capability building.

2. Within 6 months of its launch the unprecedented challenge of pandemic forced all to work from home.

3. It made hiring, onboarding & retaining talents even difficult as it was completely remote and online.

4. DevOps expects the team members to work together, on the contrary team members were locked down across multiple cities in two countries.

5. Not to mention the immense mental and physical stress of the uncertain pandemic period.

The Initiatives – DevOps Up-Skilling:

1. Hiring and recruitment:

Ensuring that there is sufficient SRE capacity to support Infrastructure as Service needs in the organisation.

Creating talent profiles, hands-on tests, code reviews process , evaluation scorecards, conducting tech interviews.

2. Onboarding and coaching:

Leading and onboarding infrastructure designs for digital banking applications on cloud.

Ensuring Production Readiness of Infrastructure on cloud for digital banking Go-live launch.

3. Bootcamps:

A series of 5 days DevOps Crash Course and hands-on workshop covering key concepts like CI-CD, Config Management, IaaC.

The Initiatives – Agile Practices:

1. Estimate & Record:

Frequently review the scope during the sprint cycle.

2. Plan & Measure:

OKR, Analysis, Acceptance criteria

3. Visibility & Tracking:

Daily Standups, Sprint Review, Showcase, Retrospective, StoryBoard

4. Quality Assurance:

Test driven infra delivery, Performance testing of infrastructure, Version control

The Outcomes:

1. Engineers(10) enabled with modern infrastructure development and CI/CD practices ensuring support to Infrastructure As Service needs in the organisation.

2. Standard Operating Principles and Support Model for SRE chapter.

3. In-house DevOps community of learning for a sustainable growth.
